For my family, Easter is not just a time for celebrating our beliefs; it is also a time to celebrate our family and to enjoy our time together. To say the least, we have had a lot going on these last several months and unfortunately, we could not all be together this Easter. Knowing we wouldn't be able to be together, I decided it was time for another fun care package! The theme for this one was “Easter Egg Hunt.” Supplies: ~ Plastic Eggs ~ Candy or other Goodies – like nuts or trail mix ~ Some sort of Basket Filler - see my Crafty Tip below ~ Box – USPS Flat Rate Boxes are great for this! ~ Colored Paper ~ Double Sided Tape ~ Scissors I decided to do the fun stuff first and stuffed all the eggs. My sister’s eggs contained cherry sours candies and gunny worms. My Mom’s eggs were filled with her favorite, Dove dark chocolate. My Dad, who is not a big candy fan, got walnuts and almonds in his eggs. I also stuffed several eggs with other candy and they were “free-for-all” eggs for whoever pulled them out of the box first. Crafty Tip: To easily identify which person each egg belongs to, color code them with stickers! I used small heart stickers; pink for my sister, purple for my Mom, and blue for my Dad. Once the eggs were stuffed, I had to “hide” them. I bought a few small packages of the plastic “Easter grass” for about a dollar a piece but it would have cost a lot more to fill the entire box. This is where the crafty tip regarding the basket filler comes in! Crafty Tip: Instead of buying a bunch of useless plastic filler, get a package of green (or any color) construction paper for about $3 and run it through a paper shredder. The package I got had 25 pages that I ran through the shredder one-at-a-time so it would give me the most volume and not get all mashed together. PLUS, it can be recycled after the box is opened! Once I had all the paper shredded, I mixed in the plastic grass filler for an added shade of green and texture. Beware, this can be a very messy step. After it was mixed I added a little to the bottom of the box then put in the extra candy and goodies which were sealed up in zip top baggies. I also added a few bags of dog treats for their crazy boys, Mack and Tebow. After that I added another layer of filler and set in some of the eggs. Then I added another layer and more eggs. I kept doing this until all the eggs were hidden/ covered. I made sure to make the top layer of filler the thickest in case the box was flipped around in transit. I didn't want any eggs to wiggle their way to the top. Another thing to know about our family: Easter is not complete without a chocolate bunny; and yes, they are eaten ears first! Anyway, I got two bunnies, one milk chocolate and one dark chocolate, and set them on top of the filler so they were the first thing that was seen when the box was opened. At this point, the box was all ready to go but me being me, I wanted to do more… so I did. I took some blue paper and cut it to fit the flaps of the box. Then I used double sided tape to stick it down. Next came a few strips of green paper that was cut to look like grass. To do this, I cut small wedges out of the strips but made sure not to be too precise. Again, I used the tape to stick them down. After the grass, I used yellow paper to cut out a sun and white paper for clouds. I added some notes and the “color code” key to the clouds then taped the sun and the clouds onto the box flaps. For one last added touch, I cut a few eggs out of pink and purple paper and tucked them into the hand-cut grass strips. Again, I used the double sided tape to stick them down. Once my box was complete, all that was left was to close it up, address it, and send it on its way! As with The Pink Box Project, I gave my parents directions to call me before opening their surprise. It was so much fun it was to watch this package unfold (via FaceTime) and their reactions as they dug deeper into it. Surprise care packages can be a great way to brighten a person’s day! AuthorTo put it mildly, I LOVE crafting! The only problem is that I don't fancy just one specific type of craft, I love it all. With this in mind, I've decided to keep a running chronicle of projects and, hopefully, inspire someone else along the way. Categories
